Murray Marathon – 27-31 Dec 05

The UQ Canoe Club is putting a team together for the Murray Marathon, the longest annual canoe race in the world, at the end of the year (27-31 December 05).

You will need to be able to paddle ~80 km a day for five days straight in a flat water TK1 boat. The event takes paddlers from Yarrawonga through to Swan Hill, in the heart of Victoria. It attracts over 800 participants, 300 volunteers and up to 3000 support crew. The Murray Marathon began in 1969 as a fundraiser for the Australian Red Cross, Victoria.

You will also be responsible for fund raising $350 and an individual outlay of $50 for the registration fee. You need to be able to get to Victoria on 26 December, and be prepared to camp out for the week.

For more information on what is involved in the race, go to the Red Cross website and keep an eye on any news updates from the organisers.

If you are interested in joining the UQCC team, and being part of the fun, come along to a logistics discussion this Tuesday morning [1 Nov 05] at 6am at the club shed, ahead of a 6:30am paddle.
