Canoe Qualifications

UQCC members are encouraged to undergo training and qualification
It is to the benefit of the club to have members who are competent in the use of club equipment. The club may subsidise the costs of proficiency awards undertaken by any club member with sufficient ability and club engagement. There is an expectation of providing some instruction to other club members during and following certification.

General Pool Training

Scheduled Tuesday evenings

New Paddlers & members, this is your chance to learn important skills in a CLEAN easy environment – and the POOL is HEATED (27 deg.)
Don’t miss out!

Canoe polo continues every Tuesday evening during semester after this.

Who’s it for: Open to all club members – ONLY (you need to have joined the canoe club first (you can do this online just before, and bring the printed forms on the night). However, you do not have to have completed any new club member inductions to attend.
Meeting time: 7:45 PM on scheduled Tuesday evenings below
Duration: 1.5 hours
Cost: $10 members (members only, unless specifically invited)
Location: University of Queensland Pool (UQ Building 27 or picture)
Purpose: Training, general skills development, skill building, & fun.

Here’s a chance to learn and practice a variety of skills. These training sessions are very useful for all kayaking, but are slanted toward polo.

  • Basic paddle strokes (stop, start, sweep strokes, reverse sweep strokes, steering without a rudder)
  • Wet exits
  • Bracing, edging, and sideways paddling
  • T-rescues (whitewater) also called Eskimo rescues (in Sea kayaking)
  • Possible rolling practice

Trainer: Various capable club members

SEMESTER 1 2018 – Next General Pool Training Sessions

  • Tuesday 27th Feb 2018 7:45 PM to 9:30 PM – General training for all club members
  • Tuesday 6th March 2018 7:45 PM to 9:30 PM – General training for all club members
  • Tuesday 13th March 2018 7:45 PM to 9:30 PM – General training for all club members and Intro to canoe polo
  • Tuesdays after these dates are primarily for canoe polo, but similar training sessions will run regularly in the shallow end for those wanting to build their skills. Some nights there will be for other kinds of sessions in the shallow end (e.g. rescue training, rolling, freestyle). You can also mix training with trying out canoe polo. Maybe you’ll discover a latent interest in polo (like many others have done before you), or simply realise that polo is a great way to build your skills for other disciplines!

As long as canoe polo sessions are held at the UQ pool, there is space for any club members to come along and practice in the pool alongside polo training. All club members are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity while it lasts (use it or lose it). Experienced club members are available to help you improve your skills.

Self-practice is also open to Australian canoeing members (e.g. members of other AC affiliated canoe clubs), but this must be pre-arranged prior to arrival at the pool, and only on polo evenings (not the general pool training sessions listed here).

Sessions run from 7:45 PM to 9:30 PM (we are gone by 10 PM after clearing up).

    What to bring

    • Towel and swimming gear (there are shower facilities at the pool)
    • Money to put toward pool costs.
    • Please pay and sign the form at the start of the night. Each member must sign on individually.
    • Membership form printouts and proof of payment if you have not handed these in

The club subsidises the pool hire, so the more people that take advantage of these sessions, the more sessions we can afford to hold.

    Winter Championships – open (Southbank)

    Winter Championships – Southbank 2006

    Finals: Sun 13 August 2006

Congratulations to the UQCC Canoe Polo team who won the open division of the Queensland Canoeing Canoe Polo Winter Championships at Southbank.

The Uni team performed strongly over the day, winning their spot in the final.

In the final, the Uni established an early lead over their opposition, but it was not to last. In an exciting finish, the score was levelled at 3 all – with only minutes remaining.

A final uni goal sealed the championship. This was the third year running that a UQCC team has won.

    The UQCC team

Thanks go to all the participants from Ipswich District Canoe Club, the Centenary Canoeing club, and the Broken Paddle Canoe Club (Boonah) (many of whom travelled long distances) for making the competition a success and a lot of fun. Thanks are very much due to Rachel Thomas and Queensland Canoeing for their efforts in organising a really enjoyable championship.

    Club Internet Resource Overview

    • Home The Club Website
The website shows general club news as well as news for special interest groups. It also holds many information pages about the club’s operation and practices. Other pages detail planned events, competitions, training opportunities, and trips that are planned during the year. It is the main entry point to information about the club and its activities.

There’s an archive of news article topics.
    • Email lists
The club uses email lists to help disseminate information about activities. You will be added to this if you have completed 3 things

      1. Submitted your online membership form
      2. Handed in a signed printed copy of the membership form to a club inductor (we need signed copies)
      3. Shown us evidence of payment (e.g. bank receipt)

    • Web news
Web based summaries of web news posts are available by clicking on the “Latest news” links at the top of each news section on the main web page. These show the latest news from each section. A summary of recent news can also be obtained via the RSS method (below).

    • Gallery home Old Photo galleries and Photos extra photos (old)

    • UQCC RSS news Get information automatically using news feeds
The easiest way to stay informed about club website updates is to use RSS news. It is a very easy and convenient method that eliminates the need to keep checking the website. RSS allows the latest information to be automatically updated on your computer. Methods of accessing RSS feeds include –

      • Email programs – RSS feeds appear as a “mail box”.
If your mail application supports RSS, enter the URL for the RSS feed into the mail application’s settings (e.g. “Add RSS feed” menu option). The RSS feed can be set to look like a mail box, and the information appear with your email. A guide to setting this up is here.
      • Screen savers – screen savers show latest news
Add an RSS screen saver module to your computer, and link it to the website’s news feed.

        • Windows computers: RSS screen savers are available here and here and here
        • Mac OS computers (10.4 and up): An RSS screen saver is built in. Go to the RSS visualiser in the screen saver panel of your system preferences. Select the UQ canoe club RSS feed in the options (make sure you’ve already bookmarked the RSS feed in Safari so it appears on the list).

      • Web browsers – show the number of unread items next to the bookmark.
Bookmark the RSS link in your web browser. When new articles are posted on a web page, the corresponding number of new articles will automatically appear at the end of the bookmark in the browser. Clicking on the bookmark will display a short summary of all the new articles. Clicking on the summaries will bring up the full article. An “RSS” icon may appear in a the address field of a webpage in your browser (see the address field for this page). Clicking on this button will show/hide the site’s RSS feed.
      • Dedicated RSS applications – designed to provide the best management of multiple RSS feeds.

This website supports Atom and RSS feeds (choose either)

Many RSS pages on the club’s site will show an “RSS” button in the web browser’s address bar, if the page is RSS savvy. Clicking on the button will show a list of all the latest changes to the site or resource.

The following resources support RSS –

    • Webmail
The club provides uqcanoeclub.net email addresses to committee members and to selected club members who contribute toward club activities in a manner that warrants an address. These emails are either forwarded to their normal email account, or sometimes a full email account is provided that includes this webmail interface.

Green Flea Markets at West End

The Green Flea Market at West End is a popular destination for Saturday morning kayak trips. Members paddle towards the city, and meet at the markets at Davies park for tea/coffee/breakfast. Newcomers have a chance to meet other members of the club.

Some people also take the opportunity to do their weekly fruit & vegetable shopping. The markets sell a large selection of very cheap fruit and vegetables (including organic) – ideal for the student budget. International club members have the opportunity to experience Brisbane’s river lifestyle first-hand, and take away unique memories of their time spent living here.

Remember to plan how to carry your purchases home safely (e.g. take a sea kayak, carry bag, and a large plastic/garbage bag to cover everything and keep any water out).

Market trips meet at the club shed at 7:30 AM on Saturday mornings, and generally take a leisurely and social 2-3 hours

Take a photo tour of the markets.

Let’s hope the markets are part of the city council’s master plan for the area.

    Logo Competition

    Club logo design competition

The club needs a logo for its website, club T-shirts, a club banner, and general advertising. We don’t currently have one.

To remedy this, we are having a logo competition.

    It is open to everyone!

If you have a flair for art and some creativity, take part in this contest.

We are out on the search for:

    1. a Logo for our club
    2. a nice design to print on club T-shirts

The creator of the best logo or T-shirt design gets a FREE club T-shirt!

Send your ideas to Milena (publicity officer). Weíll post the candidate logos and designs on our website (here). Early next year we aim to print club T-shirts using these designs.

Deadline for design submission is the 31st of December.

High resolution images are best, but if you have any other format, including a hand-made drawing, contact Milena (publicity), and weíll get it from you.

    Tips for logos/designs

    • Don’t make things too complex
    • 3 or less colours
    • 3 or less points
    • 3 or less fonts

Keep ease of production, computerisation, and scale in mind. If you have a great design that doesn’t fit these well, please submit it anyway.

Take a look at currently submitted entries
