Use of Log books

Club members are strongly encouraged to maintain simple paddling log books detailing their training, paddling sessions, and trips. While you could simply use a school exercise book bought from your newsagent/supermarket. It is better to use a spreadsheet, or if you have a smart phone use the paddle log app.

Log books serve a number of purposes.

  • Activity record – useful if, at some point in the future, you wish to show your experience to –
    • indicate your skill level to a trip organiser so that they will feel happy to have you join a trip
    • show your commitment should you ask the club to subsidise any formal training and certification
    • contribute your prior experience toward some sort of certificate
  • Training record – showing how regularly you are training and what type of training
  • Personal record – maintain a personal record of your paddling experiences and trips

You might think about including the following information. If you use a spreadsheet, use a format that you can potentially import into a logbook app (see the paddle log app format).

  • Session number
  • Date and times
  • Destination
  • Purpose
  • Canoe/kayak used
  • Conditions
  • Participants
  • Leader / trainder / organiser
  • General comments
  • Signature

Get your buddy, trainer, or leader to sign your log book

River cleanup paddle – Sunday 21 Oct 07

Fresh-clean-river / Save some marine life / Lets-get-out-the-Canadian-canoes trip… and Barbeque!
Everyone is invited to come on this paddle with a purpose. We’ve all seen (and collected) rubbish that floats down the river. It’s ugly, degrades the environment, and harms the animals that have to live amongst it. This paddle aims to tidy up our bit of the river, collect as much rubbish as we can, and have a bit of a fun and exercise while doing it. We plan to start at Oxley Creek and paddle down to the UQ club shed (with the tide). Afterwards there is an option for a swim in the Uni pool.

Later in the day there is also a barbeque a few suburbs away – it’s BYO (drink and food).

RSVP by Saturday to Fiona.
This will help with the organisation of boats and/or barbeque.

Race reports
Wed 29 Aug (report: Jitka)
What a race it was! Mark Hinder came in with a new club record, crossing the line in just 14 mins and 09 seconds and looking as fresh as when heíd started. Whether it was elation from just handing in his PhD thesis or super-human strength remains to be seen next week. Everyone had a good time, despite the strong current on the way up. The new paddles proved a massive success and all the new kayaks were tested for their speed and agility. Next week the handicaps will be swapped around so its an even tighter finish. See you all there for your chance to win a prize! Everyone is welcome.

Flatwater Events (2006)

Event List

Peppertown BV100 Charity paddle

A 100km charity paddle down the Brisbane River from Wivenhoe Dam to West End

Details are available at Qld Canoeing (http://www.canoe.org.au/?Page=8333)

The club had two entries – a relay team (TK2) and a solo effort (K1). The point was not to race, but to participate. Each day was divided into shorter sections ranging from 8.5 km to 13 km. Relay team members paddled two legs per day.

Day 1 (Sat 7th Oct): Wivenhoe Spillway to Kholo Lagoon
Day 2 (Sun 8th Oct): Kookaburra Park, Karana Downs to Orleigh Park,
West End

Purpose:

  • Raise funds and help kids with cancer (Camp Quality).
  • Enjoy a surprisingly beautiful river.
  • Have fun.

Time: October 7th & 8th (Sat & Sun)
Duration: 1 or 2 days
Paddle type: Flatwater
Distances: Full (100 km)
Location: Brisbane river (many parts upstream are quite beautiful)
Contact: Flatwater representative
Cost: $100 per person (up to $75 of this may be from sponsorship)

Report
The race was well organised and ran smoothly. The TK2 relay team progressed well, surviving the infamous logjam. However, the K1 boat encountered gravel runs soon after starting, and had serious rudder problems for the rest of the day. A different K1 kayak was used on day 2 (thanks support crew!).

A few months earlier a club kayaking trip ran into two fields of water hyacinth that blocked the river. The first took over an hour and a huge team effort to paddle through. Boats were carried around the second. Everyone who was on that earlier trip appreciated the work of the Wivenhoe Dam staff who successfully cleared these blockages prior to the race.

Day one finished with a relaxing afternoon swim and our campsite was set up. The BV100 organisers and supporting groups arranged live music (who were pretty good), generous amounts of hot food, and a large bonfire.

On day two, a skirt was used to prevent boat wakes from flooding the low set TK2 kayak. Luckily the wake-boarders were not as bad as the previous year. Despite this, the large M.V. Mirimar cruise boat (on its way to Lone Pine Koala sanctuary) and the City Cat ferry combined bow waves to bring the low riding TK2 to grief during the final leg. It recovered and finished. The afternoon awards session had many prizes, with a strong emphasis on fun and fundraising rather than competition, reflecting the fun character of the BV100.

We raised at least $450 for Camp Quality

Club Photos and Official BV100 photos are available

Looking forward to next year…

Race reports
Wed 31 Jan
Well we had our first race on Wednesday (31/1) with a small, but
enthusiastic bunch of paddlers. After a bit of a chat about the racing
the first people were sent out on the 2.6klm course. We had shortened it
from the advertised 5klm as that was far too long for Wednesday
afternoon fun racing. It wasn’t long till everyone was out of sight and
it was just the starter on his Pat Malone waiting to see what unfolded.
First to be sighted was Jitka Kochanek, who according to everyone, tore
up the course. Despite paddling 5k’s beforehand she still managed to
take home the bottle of Rex Watson of Coonawarra Red. Everyone had a
good time and the racing was very close, with the handicapper making
sure that everyone was within a couple of minutes of each other.

All club members are welcome to come down and try. The races are
handicapped to give everyone a chance, so you can be any speed in any
boat. The racing is not serious and is designed to be fun for people who
are not really into racing. Please come down and support the races, you
never know, you might even be going home with a nice bottle of wine. If
you have any questions please contact the seakaying rep

There was a strong run out tide for the race this week. Thankfully there
was less wind, less wake boarders and we nearly timed our run with the
city cats to perfection. Everyone got away well with Michael Wynne
leading the field around the turning buoy. He was out in front for
almost the entire race, getting run down in the last 10 Metres by Mark
Hinder. Mark, starting second last, powered through the field and he and
Michael led home a log jam of kayakers. Everyone was home within 50
seconds of the leaders providing some close racing and a hard time for
the finisher. The winner took home a well deserved bottle of Rex Watson
wine for his trouble. Big thanks to Marj for doing the timing and to
everyone for coming along. See you all next week.

“I finally felt comfortable in the boat” Michael Wynne said afterwards,
and didn’t it show. He powered away from the start and never looked like
getting caught. Everyone battled a fair head wind on the way out, and
the fleet was still evenly spread at the buoy. Michael turned first and
took full advantage of the now tail wind and flew home to post his
fastest time for the course. It was a quick day all up, with everyone
posting their best times. There was a great duel behind Michael with
Ben and Scott keeping each other honest until the finish.

The award winning Rex Watsons Shiraz was taken home by Michael. Thanks
to Mark Hinder for doing the timing, and all the paddlers for an
enjoyable afternoon. See you all next week, ready to race for another
bottle of Rex Watsons.

Wed 21 Feb
A strong run out tide greeted the paddlers last Wednesday. It made for a
long paddle up to the turning mark with some big gains being made by the
back markers. Marjorie Morgan flew out of the blocks and turned quickly
with a small lead over Mark Hinder. Mark pressured her all the way to
the finish but she held on to get over the line first. The strong tide
played around with a lot of the paddlers with the field a little spread
by the end. This will give the handicapper an interesting job for this
week.

Big thanks to Jitka for doing the timing. See you all next week for the
next lot of fun races. As usual the bottle of Rex Watsons will be up for
grabs.

Wed 28 Feb
A couple of new faces for racing this week, and they showed their talent from the outset leaving all the regular paddlers in their wake. Eranda and Lucy enjoyed the incoming tide, both got away quickly and never looked back. The move of the day was El Presidente Paul around the turning buoy, making up four boat lengths on Mark with an aggressive tight turn right on the buoy. What else would you expect from a white-water paddler. In the end it was Eranda taking home the Rex Watson chardonnay. The slight tide made for some very fast times, with nearly everyone posting their fastest times for the course.

Big thanks to Jo Gifkins for doing the timing this week. Looking forward
to seeing everyone there for another instalment or racing and yet
another bottle of Rex Watsons wine. Until then……

The handicapper has a theory that a strong run out tide favours the people who start last. You think he would adjust the handicaps when he know this is going to happen. This week proved the theory correct again with the late starters cleaning up.

Tamsin Barnes won her second race in a row walked away with another bottle of Rex Watsons for her trouble. Despite the strong tide the racing was again very close, with some good times being recorded. Newcomer James doing particularly well coming in 20 seconds behind Tamsin. A more gentle tide next week should being the field back a bit close for next weeks race.
