River cleanup paddle – Sunday 21 Oct 07

Fresh-clean-river / Save some marine life / Lets-get-out-the-Canadian-canoes trip… and Barbeque!
Everyone is invited to come on this paddle with a purpose. We’ve all seen (and collected) rubbish that floats down the river. It’s ugly, degrades the environment, and harms the animals that have to live amongst it. This paddle aims to tidy up our bit of the river, collect as much rubbish as we can, and have a bit of a fun and exercise while doing it. We plan to start at Oxley Creek and paddle down to the UQ club shed (with the tide). Afterwards there is an option for a swim in the Uni pool.

Later in the day there is also a barbeque a few suburbs away – it’s BYO (drink and food).

RSVP by Saturday to Fiona.
This will help with the organisation of boats and/or barbeque.

killed turtle
Sick or dead marine and bird life that have ingested rubbish are regularly found in Moreton bay. Not all survive. To see what killed this little green turtle, click here.
More infomation about plastic in the sea is here and here
Sealed fate!
Data collected about river litter will be used to help compare what’s found in the river to what is washed up in the bay. A litter data bank is run by Dunwich State School and Secondary Dept Marine Science Students to collect information and increase public awareness of the problem of the growing amount of litter occurring on Moreton bay island beaches.

Date: Sunday 21 October
