Website Migration to New Web Software

Hi all,

We’re in the process of moving to new website software. This means there will be broken links, web pages in need of attention, and various other issues.

We are moving from Movable Type, the original content management system, to WordPress. This is instead of updating to the current version of Movable Type. The main reason is that WordPress is supported better by our web hosting company, so we are less likely to encounter issues that break the software and consequently the site, leaving us in a technical deep end (this has happened several times)! Also, more people are familiar with it. The migration also gives us the opportunity to upgrade the look of the site and its interaction with modern devices. At the moment, the main aim is to migrate to WordPress, slowly improving content/function later.

THE OLD SITE IS HERE

If you do see any issues please log a report by filling in the form at the bottom of each page. All you really need to do is cut and paste the broken URL or the text that has errors. Drawing our attention to it should be enough for us to locate it and see the problem.

Qualified Club Members

Canoe qualifications and certifications formalise the training of individuals and ensure the skills learned meet accepted standards. Recognised expertise and training is necessary to ensure trips and events are properly organised and run. Qualified members are valuable providers of guidance, training, expertise, and leadership for other club members.

Acknowledgements and Thanks

256-Eagle K1 Geraldine Squires Geraldine very kindly donated a Kayak Centre made Eagle K1 kayak. The Eagle design was used by the US Olympic team to win medals in the late 1980s, and went on to underlie racing designs in the 90s and into the 2000s. This kayak helps expand the high end options available to club members. 2014

Brisbane City Council

 The club was grateful to accept a $5220 Community Sport Clubs Grant (Nr 13/14508) from the Brisbane City Council. This is to organise, set up, and improve administrative and coaching systems within the club. It includes funds for a senior Queensland coach to restructure the club training and coaching program, support trainee coaches, and review and improve club procedures. This is part of over $2.3 million that the council has awarded this round in support of local community sport clubs in Brisbane. 2014

Queensland Canoeing

 The UQ pool was reopened a year after the 2011 floods. However it does not have the infrastructure for Canoe polo goals.
QC again came to the club’s rescue. They have lent the club their floating polo goal. It’s now possible for UQ (and other polo playing clubs) to play in inner Brisbane on a regular basis once more. We can now start rebuilding canoe polo in the club and take advantage of an influx of enthusiastic and able new members. 		2012
185-Rosco 2012.jpg Chris Khoo UQ Masters student Chris Khoo very kindly donated a full set of kayak gear to the club, including

  • A Rosco kayak in excellent condition
  • A sea kayak paddle
  • A Riptide PFD
  • A dry bag, kayak straps, and night light

This is a great addition to the club with a modern version of these much used and hardy boats. The club is extremely grateful to accept this donation. Members will benefit from this generosity for years to come.

Insurance House

 The club was impacted significantly by the January 2011 Floods. This resulted in our first major insurance claim. In our dealings with the insurer we found them to be constructive, fair, and reasonable. The marine hull insurance is the prime reason the club has bounced back strongly. We were one of the first UQ sporting clubs to have the major part of their insurance sorted out, and this put us back into action sooner.
After the 2011 flood, there were many stories of people discovering their insurance companies did not perform anywhere near what they expected. We think it is important to acknowledge that our marine hull insurance was not one of these stories. Our experience was a positive one.		 2011
12-qld.gif Queensland Canoeing After the floods wiped out most of the club’s boats, QC helped us restart operations through the loan of several sea kayaks that bolstered our minimal fleet (before replacement or repaired boats were available). 2011
