Coochiemudlo island

Circumnavigate Coochiemudlo island (in Moreton Bay), followed by training.

This is an easy paddle for anyone with basic skills, and some time will be spent improving these in the water off the island, moving toward more advanced skills.

CoochieMudlo is a small island with sandy beaches off Victoria Point.

We will meet at the club shed at 6 am with a view to departing at 7am and being on
the water by 8.30 am.

High tide is at 10 am. We will kayak around CoochieMudlo and probably across to
Macleay Island then return to CoochieMudlo where we will practice edging, bracing
and hip flicking – building up skills for those wanting to learn to roll or to land through
surf.

Note: Sea kayaking on Moreton Bay can be hazardous. The trip may be modified
or cancelled if conditions are unsuitable.

Trip report (Michael Wynne)

There were nine kayakers and, with the trailer packed the night before, we made an early start. The weather was perfect with the breeze less than five knots (predicted 10-15 rising to 20 knots). We went anticlockwise around Coochiemudlo at high tide with rudders up, practising controlling the kayak by edging and paddle stroke. We stopped to talk about and practice bracing, and then later using the paddle for rear and forward ruddering.

We were well ahead of schedule so, after a snack on the beach, we crossed to Macleay Island and kayaked up the western side for an hour before returning to Coochiemudlo for an early lunch.

After lunch we practiced rescues, and then received some rolling instructions from Scott and Peter. Scott demonstrated a hand roll – the first time he had rolled a sea kayak! While few of us got up, we all have something to work towards. We were back at Victoria Point by 3.30 pm, packed the kayaks and were comfortably back at the club shed by 5 pm. Total distance kayaked approximately 20 km.
