Beginners Sea Kayak trip

A sea kayak training trip at Paradise Point, on the Gold Coast.

Paradise Point is a sheltered area abutting the Broadwater on the Gold Coast. We will meet at the club shed at 6am with a view to departing at 7am and being on the water by 8.30 am.

The training session will concentrate on wet exits, T-rescues and safety. While paddling we will keep an eye on each other’s paddling strokes and techniques.
After the initial training session we will kayak on the Broadwater and visit South Stradbroke Island. We will stop off to introduce and practice different strokes, edging, self rescues and other techniques for boat control.

Safety: Sea kayaking on Moreton Bay can be hazardous. The trip may be modified if conditions are unsuitable.

Duration: All Day. We plan to leave the club by 7 AM, be on the water before 8.30 AM and be off the water by 4 PM and back at the shed by 5.30 PM.
Distance: about 15km.
Paddle type: Sea kayaking
Requirements:

  • Basic fitness – although this trip will cater for beginners, basic kayaking skills and fitness are required. It is intended for those who have been kayaking on the river or done prior kayaking.
  • Basic skills – It is intended for those who can already kayak with moderate proficiency. We will learn to use a skirt, do a wet exit and an assisted rescue. We will attempt self rescues.

Equipment: Sea kayaks, skirts, paddle leashes, whistles, bailers and PFDs. You will get wet. Bring dry paddling gear to change into after the training session. Bring a picnic lunch, snacks, at least 2L WATER, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, insect repellent, money, towel, warm gear, a wind and rain proof top, and a change of clothing as you will all get wet.

Basic Costs: If you can afford it, a donation towards kayak upkeep. Contribution for petrol.

Meet: 6 AM at the UQ Canoe Club to load kayaks. Depart 7 AM and drive to Paradise Point. Aim to be on the water before 9.30 AM.
Tides: High tide is about 12.30 PM so there will be plenty of water, but some kayaking against the tide.
