Equipment Care

All equipment is to be washed thoroughly with fresh water after use. Please use a bucket, sponge, and rain water (if available) from the tap at the front of the shed. A handle for the tap is stored inside the shed (take care not to leave it on the tap or lose it!).

The club has elected to purchase plastic sea kayaks, which are very robust but not indestructible. Unlike fibreglass hulls the plastic boats will not easily fracture over rough surfaces, but care should be taken to avoid scraping the hulls. Plastic boats cannot be repaired to the same extent as fibreglass kayaks.

The rougher the hulls get, the slower you’ll be able to paddle and the shorter the lifetime of the boats.

Rudders are quite vulnerable so take care when transporting the boats, and be sure to raise the rudders when landing. Proper transport of boats is of particular importance because of the safety concerns and the potential for severe damage.

Strap all boats down securely.

  • Plastic sea kayaks – it is important to either use kayak cradles or foam padding, or otherwise mount the boats on their side. The long unsupported plastic hulls bend and remain buckled when strapped down flat on roof racks.
  • Fibreglass kayaks – should be strapped onto cradles or foam padding. Strapping directly to a roof rack will dent the bottom, and can crack the kayak (this has happened!). Do not strap them down too tightly, as this may crack them.

Although PFDs are nice and soft, sitting on them compresses the foam and reduces the buoyancy. They are not to be sat on – someone may depend on them.

Flare kits should be kept dry in bags stored in the kayak hatches. Tie pumps to the deck rigging with a short length of cord to avoid loss. Paddle ties are available to attach your paddle to the boat. Spare (split) paddles, helmets, and tow ropes are also part of the safety gear. Make sure to check the tow rope is ready and able to be deployed quickly before you depart (make sure it is not tangled). A steel cable and padlock is available to secure kayaks while away from the shed if needed.

Green ant and Fire ant TK1 kayaks are very fragile and must NOT be stored on the top two shelves in the boatshed. The angles needed to move them on/off the racks places too much strain on the hulls and will crack them.

Notify the club equipment officers of any damage that does occur.

Email Lists

The club also uses email lists to keep members updated with news, events, and general announcements about club activities.
Email is an important method of staying informed.

You should receive periodic emails from the club. If you don’t, please check if you are on the system using the configuration page below.

Configuring your own Email List Settings

Use the web to configure your personal settings for the club’s email lists. You can –

  • check your email is listed in the club’s email system
  • Add or remove yourself to/from special interest email groups
    • Whitewater special interester group
    • Canoe polo special interester group
    • Sea kayaking special interester group
    • Flatwater special interester group
  • update your email address
  • remove yourself from the email system

Configure your email settings here
Enter your email address in the text box, and press continue.
You will be emailed details of how to login and set your interest groups.

If the system responds with “User not found” then you either (1) did not use the same email address you supplied to the club, or (2) changed it and did not enter the changed address correctly, or (3) are not yet added to the system (it takes a few weeks to process the forms). If the problem continues, please alert the club’s membership officer or secretary so things can be checked.

General club lists
You should automatically be on one of these two club email lists. If you not on one of these lists, you will not receive general club emails.

  • Financial 20xx – the list for the current year. If you have paid your membership for the year you should end up on the list (give it a few weeks)
  • Financial 20xx Renewal – the list of members for the previous year who need to renew their membership in the current year. If you have not paid for the current year you should end up on this list. Membership turns over in March. After September you will no longer receive normal club emails if you do not renew your membership.

Paddling Distances

Distances are measured one way from the UQ Club Shed (km).
Estimated using Google earth and Google maps.

Be mindful that apparent distances will change considerably with tide, wind, weather conditions, route taken, and type of kayak used. Bold distances denote a northside feature.

Acknowledgements and Thanks

Thank you

The club gratefully acknowledges the generous support of the following individuals and groups

256-Eagle K1 Geraldine Squires Geraldine very kindly donated a Kayak Centre made Eagle K1 kayak. The Eagle design was used by the US Olympic team to win medals in the late 1980s, and went on to underlie racing designs in the 90s and into the 2000s. This kayak helps expand the high end options available to club members. 2014

Brisbane City Council

The club was grateful to accept a $5220 Community Sport Clubs Grant (Nr 13/14508) from the Brisbane City Council. This is to organise, set up, and improve administrative and coaching systems within the club. It includes funds for a senior Queensland coach to restructure the club training and coaching program, support trainee coaches, and review and improve club procedures. This is part of over $2.3 million that the council has awarded this round in support of local community sport clubs in Brisbane. 2014

Queensland Canoeing

The UQ pool was reopened a year after the 2011 floods. However it does not have the infrastructure for Canoe polo goals.
QC again came to the club’s rescue. They have lent the club their floating polo goal. It’s now possible for UQ (and other polo playing clubs) to play in inner Brisbane on a regular basis once more. We can now start rebuilding canoe polo in the club and take advantage of an influx of enthusiastic and able new members.

185-Rosco 2012.jpg Chris Khoo UQ Masters student Chris Khoo very kindly donated a full set of kayak gear to the club, including

  • A Rosco kayak in excellent condition
  • A sea kayak paddle
  • A Riptide PFD
  • A dry bag, kayak straps, and night light

This is a great addition to the club with a modern version of these much used and hardy boats. The club is extremely grateful to accept this donation. Members will benefit from this generosity for years to come.

(marine hull insurance)

Insurance House
(underwriter)

The club was impacted significantly by the January 2011 Floods. This resulted in our first major insurance claim. In our dealings with the insurer we found them to be constructive, fair, and reasonable. The marine hull insurance is the prime reason the club has bounced back strongly. We were one of the first UQ sporting clubs to have the major part of their insurance sorted out, and this put us back into action sooner.
After the 2011 flood, there were many stories of people discovering their insurance companies did not perform anywhere near what they expected. We think it is important to acknowledge that our marine hull insurance was not one of these stories. Our experience was a positive one.

12-qld.gif Queensland Canoeing After the floods wiped out most of the club’s boats, QC helped us restart operations through the loan of several sea kayaks that bolstered our minimal fleet (before replacement or repaired boats were available). 2011
