Anyone can come along to these races, provided they are able to paddle 3 km. Handicaps are in place, so we all cross the finish line at about the same time and everyone has a chance to win! A prize is in store for whoever does win.
Races are open to all club members – using any boat. Handicaps apply, so you will have a chance at winning a small prize.
Paddle type: Flatwater
Duration: 1 hour
Meeting time: 4:45 PM sharp – for a briefing and to grab the boats.
Race start: 5:00 PM
Handicap: Slower paddlers start first. Other paddlers gradually follow. First back to the club wins.
Distance: 3 km (around the red buoy)
Location: University of Queensland building 30 – UQ Canoe club boat shed
Address: North river end of Sir William MacGregor Drive, St. Lucia
Cost: A nominal $2 contribution towards the prize.

What a race it was! Mark Hinder came in with a new club record, crossing the line in just 14 mins and 09 seconds and looking as fresh as when heíd started. Whether it was elation from just handing in his PhD thesis or super-human strength remains to be seen next week. Everyone had a good time, despite the strong current on the way up. The new paddles proved a massive success and all the new kayaks were tested for their speed and agility. Next week the handicaps will be swapped around so its an even tighter finish.
