North Stradbroke Island Weekend

A three day weekend visiting various islands in Moreton Bay, staying two nights on the largest – North Stradbroke island. We will stay two nights at UQ’s Moreton Bay Research Station (rooms and sheets provided, but bring a towel).

Note this trip was cancelled due to bad (windy) weather forecasts
An alternative two day trip to Clarrie Hall Dam and the Tweed and Rous rivers is here.

This is an alternative to the Noosa Trip as the intended Upper Noosa river areas are affected by bushfires (including Harry’s Hut camp site and the Sand patch walk).

Note there are minor fires on the land between Dunwich and Amity. We will paddle past these, but not close. However, if you have respiratory issues potentially affected by smoke, please reconsider participating.

On Saturday we will leave from Victoria Point paddling south of Coochiemudlo island, stopping at Pott’s Point on the north end of Macleay island. After a brief stop we will cross to Blakesley’s anchorage on North Stradbroke island for lunch. We will then paddle north to Dunwich where we will spend the night.

On Sunday we will have an early paddle around the bottom of the tide to Amity. After looking around Amity we will catch the tide back to Dunwich. In the afternoon we will have time to drive/bus to Point Lookout and look at the beaches and dunes there (not paddling). Potentially swimming at a patrolled beach.

On Monday we will catch the tide over to Coochiemudlo island for lunch, potentially stopping at Peel island, before returning to Victoria Point.

If the weather deteriorates on Saturday we may paddle in the vicinity of Dunwich during the high tide, and spend the rest of the day exploring North Stradbroke island as tourists! If the weather is poor on Monday, and depending on the wind direction or speed, we may take a more sheltered path by returning the way we came. If the weather forecast is too challenging, we may have some or all participants return via either the car ferry or the passenger ferry (in which case boats will be left in Dunwich for return later in the week), or we will return earlier (eg Sunday instead of Monday)
