Fraser Island Trip – Poona to Tin Can Bay

A three day trip (3.5 day including travel) along the southern side of Fraser island and into Tin Can Bay.

This trip was moved from April to the October long weekend (finer details such as tides/timings to be updated)

Event ID: 211001S

This is a trip along the Sandy Strait from the township of Poona along the south side of Fraser Island to Inskip Point and then into Tin Can Bay.

Fraser Island is the world’s largest sand island, and part of a unique sand island system running beside south east Queensland. It has spectacular scenery and is home to an abundant array of wildlife. We hope to see dugong and perhaps dingos.

On Friday we will load boats and drive up to Poona for the night, staying overnight at the Poona Palms Caravan Park (near the boat ramp put in point). We will paddle over to our Fraser island camp site in the middle of the day/afternoon. On Sunday we plan to paddle 22km through Tin Can Bay and camp for the night. Although this is long for grade 1, it is with the tide.

We plan to end the paddling at Tin Can Bay before noon on Monday (it’s a long weekend), and then drive back to Brisbane that afternoon/evening.

Paddlers are expected to be self-sufficient and will need to carry all food, water, camping and safety gear required for the trip.

Sails will be permitted BUT not essential on this trip.

Trip Route: Poona to Coolooloi. Coolooloi to Poverty Point. Poverty Point to Tin Can Bay.
