G1: Intro to Sea Kayaking – Broadwater

A day trip to Wavebreak island on the Gold Coast to learn the basic skills needed for sea kayaking.

A training trip around Wavebreak island. We will stop on the beach of the island, facing the Gold Coast Seaway, for lunch and training activities. If conditions are unsuited (eg wind/wind direction or swell/waves) we may use the alternate route to South Currigee.

Note this trip is limited to 10 people (the club as 9 boats). Don’t leave it too late to register. There may be 1 or 2 other more experienced club members coming along too to help.

Training Outline

Phase 1 (prior to on water activity)
* Standard Trip/ activity briefing
* Seat adjustment/ posture
* Paddle strokes – forward/ back (reverse)/ stop
* Bracing – low brace, high brace.
* Turning/ keeping straight/ ‘leaning’ to turn
* Basic tide/ current knowledge – how this impacts on our trip planning/
* ferry gliding
* Rules of the pod/ paddle signals
* What to take (for a day trip) and where to stow it (basic intro)
* How to identify hazards/ dangers (basic intro)

Phase 2 (on water on route)
* Demonstration and assistance with execution of paddle strokes, turning/ keeping straight/ ferry gliding/ edging / Brace strokes

Phase 3 (arrival at IN WATER skill training session)
* At this stage this activity will occur on the eastern side of Wavebreak Island off a sandy beach. On arrival at this location there will be the opportunity to adapt clothes for in water activities (note there are NO change facilities)
* Demonstrate and execute wet exit and hazards associated with this.
* Assisted rescue – including ‘T’ rescue, ‘all in rescue’, rescue with a stirrup, Eskimo rescue,
Self rescue – paddle float rescue

Phase 4 (trip home)
* Towing and continued execution of learned skills

Paddler Requirements ✓ Conditions can be calm, but can change dramatically with winds and tides contributing significantly to this.

Additional Comments/Instructions
  • This is a training trip. You will be getting wet when we practice rescues.
  • The broadwater has a lot of boat traffic. Please make sure you stay with the group and only cross boat channels with the group when directed.
