Inductors 2014

Some club members are approved by the club committee to take visitors and new members for inductions on the river. If you’d like to take a group of friends for a paddle to try out the club, you can do this by attending an club on-water induction session. If you have a larger group, are unable to attend a scheduled session, or there are no sessions scheduled, you will need to contact the club (Enquiries email).

Financial members are strictly forbidden from taking out visitors (non-members) unless under the supervision of a committee approved induction leader.

To email an inductor, please append @uqcanoeclub.net to the email name shown below (in green italics).
For example, an email of spam becomes “spam@uqcanoeclub.net”.

Current 2014 Committee approved trial paddle leaders (and email addresses) are

  • Caitlin Johns (email Caitlin)
  • Terence Toh (email flatwater)
  • Paul Melloy (email president)
  • Greg O’Keeffe (
  • John Simmons (email Simmo
  • Kym Alexander ()
  • Matt Rowland (email Matt
  • Ross Darnell (email fundraising
  • Martin Wynnewebadmin
  • Michael Wynnetreasurer
To contact all the inductors (eg to arrange an unscheduled induction), please send an email to inductions with @uqcanoeclub.net appended to the end.

If you are a club member with sufficient experience in paddling and in the club, and are interest in helping out by leading induction paddles, then please contact the club committee.

Induction leaders must have prior committee approval before leading on-water inductions, and must be financial members when doing so.

Green Flea Markets at West End

The Green Flea Market at West End is a popular destination for Saturday morning kayak trips. Members paddle towards the city, and meet at the markets at Davies park for tea/coffee/breakfast. Newcomers have a chance to meet other members of the club.

Some people also take the opportunity to do their weekly fruit & vegetable shopping. The markets sell a large selection of very cheap fruit and vegetables (including organic) – ideal for the student budget. International club members have the opportunity to experience Brisbane’s river lifestyle first-hand, and take away unique memories of their time spent living here.

Remember to plan how to carry your purchases home safely (e.g. take a sea kayak, carry bag, and a large plastic/garbage bag to cover everything and keep any water out).

Market trips meet at the club shed at 7:30 AM on Saturday mornings, and generally take a leisurely and social 2-3 hours

Take a photo tour of the markets.

Let’s hope the markets are part of the city council’s master plan for the area.

Irregular Events

The club hosts periodic activities through the year. These are typically training and skills activities, and are held as the need arises. Similar training may also take place during normal Saturday morning and weekly paddle sessions

If you are interested in the activity, please email the organiser (even if it is not scheduled).
