Paradise Point training day (G1)

A training day and paddle at Paradise point on the Gold Coast. Skills and rescues then a paddle to South Stradbroke Island.

Paradise Point is a sheltered area abutting the Broadwater.

We will meet at the club shed at 6 AM with a view to departing at 7 AM, and being on the water by 9.30 am.

The training session will start with a quick revision of paddling strokes and techniques. It will concentrate on rescues and edging.

After the training session we will kayak on the Broadwater and visit South Stradbroke Island.

Safety: Sea kayaking on Moreton Bay can be hazardous. The trip may be modified if conditions are unsuitable.

Time: Saturday 30th August 2008. Meet at club shed at 6 AM
Duration: All Day. We will plan to leave the club by 7 AM, be on the water before 8.30 AM and be off the water by 4 PM and back at the shed by 5.30 PM.
Distance: about 15 km.
Paddle type: Sea kayaking

Requirements:

  • Basic fitness – Although this trip will cater for relative beginners, basic skills and fitness are required. It is intended for those who have been training on the river
  • Basic skills. It is intended for those who have been attending basic skill sessions at the St Lucia Shed. We will learn to use a skirt, do a wet exit and an assisted rescue. We may attempt self rescues
  • Equipment: Sea kayaks, skirts, paddle leashes, bailers and PFDs. You will get wet. Bring dry paddling gear to change into after the training session. Bring a picnic lunch, snacks, at least 2L WATER, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, insect repellant, money, hat, towel, warm gear, wind and rain proof top and change of clothing as you can get wet.

Basic Costs: If you can afford it, a donation towards kayak upkeep. Contribution for petrol.

Meet: 6 AM at the UQ Canoe Club to load kayaks. Depart 7 AM and drive to Paradise Point. Aim to be on the water before 9.30 AM.
Tides: High tide is at 8.30 AM Low tide 2.40 PM
