Basic whitewater kayaking techniques at Wivenhoe dam. Your chance to try a bit of whitewater kayaking. Calm water, moving water, and one very optional grade 2 rapid. Don't miss out. Good for other kayaking disciplines.
Try to take advantage of the basic paddle skills and training you learned in the pool or on the river beforehand.
This is your chance to learn how to paddle the exciting sport of
whitewater kayaking. The Wivenhoe trip is a beginner trip, and is only 80 km from Brisbane city. It has one class two rapid, plus a small amount of reliable moving water, flowing into a big flat section.
We aim to teach people things like breaking in and out, general safety, a
little about river features as well as general boat control skills - especially in moving water (useful in flatwater and sea kayaking too).
It's a great trip to find out if whitewater is for you.

A weekend at Goolang (near Grafton in NSW). The perfect next step after Wivenhoe intro day.
Goolang creek is a great place to develop your skills in a kayak (particularly for moving water).
This weekend is for people of all skill levels to get out and play or
learn. Some more experienced club members will help you learn the skills needed to paddle whitewater safely. We will camp
right next to the river.
It has about two kilometres of rapids (grades 1-3). There are many grade 2 rapids (the little rapid at Wivenhoe is grade 2), with access along the creek at all points (so any rapid can be avoided). There is one optional grade 3 rapid in the middle (only for those with sufficient skill).
Goolang Creek is 35 kms west of Grafton. It is about a 4-5 hour trip each way from Brisbane.
Prior bookings are essential
Date: Sat 10th October to Sun 11th October 2010
Duration: 2 days
Destination: Goolang creek
Paddle type: Whitewater kayaking
Cost: $10/day donation for boat maintenance is encouraged, ?$8 for camping and about ?$40/50 for petrol (~1000 km round trip)
Meet: at the boat shed. Departure times depend on which cars you are going in. Consult with Breck and drivers by email. Most people will leave on Friday.
Return: depart Goolang around lunch time on Sunday.

A weekend at the 2000 Olympics whitewater stadium at Penrith, Sydney. Build your skills on what you learned at Wivenhoe dam and Goolang creek. This is a great way to learn to master grade 3 rapids.
Penrith is the only manmade whitewater structure of its kind in the southern hemisphere. The circuit finishes close to where it begins, and there is a conveyor belt to return you to the start of the course. Rapids are up to grade 3, yet are in a safe environment where the water can be turned off very fast.

About UQCC trips
- Minimum and maximum numbers exist for club trips. Don't miss out, please book your place early.
- Details are subject to change. Please check this web site regularly.
- All trips may be changed due to circumstances or conditions, and trip leaders have the final decision on whether it goes ahead or not, and who goes (they will contact you if this happens).
- Where there is an option to paddle double kayaks, then the first in get singles, and the last ones paddle doubles, unless people specifically want to take double kayaks or the trip leader decides differently.
To find out about unofficial private trips organised independently by members of the club, please attend some of the regular weekly paddling sessions. You need to make friends and network. Meet other experienced club members who share common interests, and perhaps organise your own private trips - commensurate with your abilities and experience.
Contacts
- For enquiries regarding specific trips, please contact the person organising the trip.
