== IMPORTANT WARNING - HAZARDS ==
The Brisbane River was heavily contaminated during the January 2011 floods. Bacterial levels have generally fallen in the main river to levels that are not considered dangerous, although the recommended levels for total safety have not yet been reached in all parts.
Bacterial levels in the creeks are reduced but still significant and all creeks should be avoided (eg Oxley, Toowong, and Norman creeks). We urge you to be sensible as
the club does not accept any liability for infections acquired while kayaking.
Recreational activities have recommenced on the river and many clubs are active again. However you should make your own decision on whether you wish to paddle on the river. Updates of the bacterial (enterococci) counts in the river are published by the Brisbane city council. A link to a .xls file with weekly results is on this council page.
A few club activities are still limited due to the effects of the flood. Check the status page. New equipment is ordered and continues to arrive
Important: Membership of the Canoe Club is renewable each year in March regardless of when you actually join. If you join in January or February, your membership will be current until March of the following year.
Three steps to joining the club...
- You must have read and be aware of the club rules and the club waiver.
When you join the club, you will be given copies to ensure that you have read them. You will have to sign the waiver, and acknowledge the rules.

Join UQ Sport and join the club.
To join the Canoe Club and/or UQ Sport, simply go to reception at UQ Sport and tell the staff that you wish to join. You will need to complete a membership application, sign the waiver, and pay your club membership fee(s). Canoe Club membership costs are detailed here.
You may also choose to join UQ sport at the same time if you wish (not a requirement from 2007). UQ sport membership costs vary according to any current or prior associations with the University of Queensland or other universities that you may have.

Attend a Saturday morning introductory session
The final step is to attend a Saturday morning intro session on any Saturday during university semester. The intro session will provide you with the necessary information to ensure you get the most out of your club membership. If you are unable to attend Saturday morning introductory sessions, please contact the club using the enquiries email to arrange an alternative time.
We will show you around the boat shed and explain where everything is kept, and what you need to do everytime you go for a paddle. We will also explain the club safety procedures, show you where the first aid kit is stored and provide you with some basic skills training. Finally, we will show you where to find out about trips, social activities and training courses.
If there are no Saturday mornings scheduled (e.g. during Uni holidays), or you are unable to attend a Saturday morning session, then please email a committee member (or two if it is the holiday season), and someone will be able to help you.
Once you have completed all three steps, you will be ready to sign up for trips and go for a paddle whenever you want.
