A weekend trip over the Blakesley’s Anchorage on North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah), to Dunwich, and then returning to Victoria Point via Peel and Coochiemudlo islands.
Description: We will be leaving from Victoria Point heading to Pott’s Point (NE point of Macleay Island). We will stop at Pott’s point and then cross to Blakesley’s for lunch. We will then head north to Dunwich where we will stay the night.
On Sunday we will paddle from Dunwich across to Coochiemudlo island, and then across to Victoria Point.

Discipline: Sea kayaking
Grade: 1 (first half of trip) and 2 (return). Conditions could turn into grade 2 conditions between Dunwich and Coochiemudlo islands. Grade 1 paddlers to come prepared to take a return ferry from Dunwich to Cleveland. The grade 2 paddlers will return to Victoria Point and collect cars to pick up grade 1 paddlers from Cleveland.
Water: Bay – smooth waters
Distance: Sat 20 km (tide assist), Sun 15km . Note that we will have neap tides
Load kayaks: Sat Morning 7 AM sharp (to be confirmed by email)
Meet time: 7:00 AM at the shed (sharp). Depart St. Lucia 8:00 AM.
Depart point: Victoria Point boat ramp (on the northern point of the reserve). Access via the end of Colburn Street, Victoria Point. Arrive 9:00AM. Depart 10:00 – 10:30 AM
Paddle duration:Sat: 10:30 AM to 4:00 PM; Sun: 9AM to 2 PM
Return to shed : ~4-5PM

Accommodation: Onsite at UQ MBRS Dunwich (made possible via the club’s UQ affiliation). If UQ then there will be showers, beds & sheets, eating utensils, comfort!
Food: Lunches – on beaches during paddle: Dinner – eat out in Dunwich. Breakfast – eat out or a simple onsite breakfast. Snacks when paddling and morning tea. Water!
Costs: Wear and tear contribution for club gear ~$10/day. Petrol money to your driver (~$10), Accommodation $10 – $20 (TBC), Dinner $15-$20, and a few extra dollars for coffee etc and perhaps extra if other purchases (e.g. breakfast). Bring an extra $30 for ferry costs if we choose to catch the ferry back [this is very possible given the current forecast].
Ability: Paddlers should have an appropriate level of fitness. Individuals must self assess their, and their equipment’s, ability to participate in this level club event and should consult the trip leader if any aspect of their suitability requires clarification. All participants must have demonstrated a wet exit and a sea kayak T-rescue, contact the leader ASAP if you have not done this so it can be arranged.
Risks: Boat traffic; fatigue; sunburn, hypothermia; dehydration; paddle related injuries; cuts,sprains and strains; getting separated from group; sea sickness; enter/exit boat; separation from boat; sinking boat; broken paddle; rough seas; drowning; dehydration; Major/minor injury from animal/plant; capsize; carrying boats; ineffective rudder; tripping while walking; medical conditions; bad weather/weather change; equipment failure
Risk minimisation: Keep group together during channel crossings. Periodic rest stops. Dress for the outdoors, Bring food/water/wind/ spray proof cag/ jacket and fleece to change into for lunch. Advise trip leader of any medical conditions beforehand. Safety equipment and paddler equipment. Check weather forecasts. See UQ risk assessments #45934 and #57960 for more detail.
Alternate course & take out points: The trip passes or stops on several islands so there are rest places on route. The largest leg (Sat or Sun is 10 km). There are also passenger ferries and a vehicular ferry to the southern end of Macleay Island and Karragarra Island in case of emergency. A ferry is available from Dunwich to Cleveland (mainland).

Safety Equipment: mobile, VHF radio, signal mirror, flares, spare paddle, tow line, repair kit, first aid kit.
Paddler equipment: Safe craft, spray deck, PFD, paddle leash, bailing device, medication, whistle, sunscreen, hat, long sleeved shirt/jacket/cag, minimum three litres water per day. Footwear suitable for paddling, swimming and bush walking. Food / nourishment for the duration of the trip, including lunch. Warm gear in case the wind gets up (eg thermal and spray jacket are good). Warm gear while having lunch.
