Pre-Easter Market PaddleSat 4 Apr 09 ()
Saturday 4 April will be a pre-Easter paddle to the Market. Bring some money and set aside more of your morning. For those not going to Wivenhoe dam.

Basic whitewater kayaking techniques at Wivenhoe dam. Your chance to try a bit of whitewater kayaking. Calm water, moving water, and one very optional grade 2 rapid. Don't miss out. Good for other kayaking disciplines.

A sea kayak training day at Paradise point (Gold coast). Suitable for beginners who have been kayaking on the river.

A great weekend (25-26 Aug) at Goolang (near Grafton in NSW). The perfect next step after Wivenhoe intro day.
Cost: $10/day donation for boat maintenance is encouraged, ?$8 for camping and about ?$40/50 for petrol (~1000 km round trip)
Meet: at the boat shed. Departure times depend on which cars you are going in. Consult with Scott and drivers by email. Most people will leave on Friday.
Return: depart Goolang around lunch time on Sunday.

Things you'll need -

  • The water will be cold, and you will get wet (i.e. swimming). Bring swimming clothing that will keep you warm (eg thermals or wetsuit). Avoid wearing cotton as it will not be effective in keeping you warm when you are wet. Also bring a towel and a dry change of warm clothing for afterwards.
  • Footwear that can get wet (not thongs).
  • Normal camping clothing (don't forget the jumper).
  • Camping gear - the club has some gear (tents, stoves, sleeping mats, bags), so let me know what you need, and we can arrange it. Torch
  • Food - you will be doing plenty of exercise, so bring plenty of food. If you can get into small groups for cooking, it may be easier
  • Sunscreen, Insect repellent (the bugs can be vicious), Water bottle (but you don't need water)

If you can drive, and take passengers, or take boats (ie have roof racks), please contact Scott with how many passengers (excluding you), you have room for.

If you have a medical condition, allergy or something else that you think Scott should know about, please let him know.

Byron Surf WeekendSat 6 Jun 09 ()
A semi-social trip to Byron Bay to train/play in the waves. This trip is sea-kayaking friendly, and confident sea kayakers are welcome. This is a chance for white-water and seakayak folks to meet up, compare skills, and share the odd beer.

The club is having its AGM in the evening of Friday 12 June 2009. This is an important yearly meeting for the club. We will have a barbecue at the shed, and a social evening at the Regatta hotel afterwards.

New Farm Bowls paddleSun 28 Jun 09 ()
Join us for a Sunday paddle to New Farm, followed by barefoot bowls at New Farm bowls club. We will paddle in seakayaks to Merthyr bowls club, load the boats on to the trailer (which Ernst will drive up) and then walk to New Farm bowls. Someone will drive the trailer back while the others return to the University by citycat.

It is possible to only go bowling (i.e. no paddling), but you need to register with the organisers for this as well.

Boats: Sea kayaks (only!)
Grade: 1
Meet: UQCC boat shed at ~7: 15 AM (in time to depart at 7:45 AM)
Bowls venue: 11 AM booking at New Farm bowls club
Bring: Water (2L), hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, warm clothes & perhaps a change of (dry) clothes once you have finished paddling. Shoes for the return journey.
Cost: Money for citycat fare, bowls costs, and any refreshments/food you wish to purchase.

A weekly two hour after-work night paddle up or down the river. Optional cheap meal beforehand. Come along after the afternoon time trials.

Polo games restart at the UQ pool on Tuesday evening 18 August at 7:30 PM. This semester we will try to maintain them WEEKLY. This depends on numbers - so keep coming! This follows two weeks of Tuesday night general club pool training.

The weekly Wednesday night paddles finish this Wednesday evening. There will be a Barbecue beforehand at the club shed at 6:15 PM as well - bring a little food. Don't forget your lights!

Weekly Post Polo MeetupTue 1 Sep 09 ()
Every Tuesday we're going up to the Second Degree (aka the Red Room) near the UQ Pizza cafe, after canoe polo for a quiet drink and/or meet-up. Polo ends around 9:30-10 PM. Please come prepared with a few extra dollars and maybe some warm/dry clothes :)

Weekly Wednesday afternoon time trials commence on Wed 2 September 2009.

Due to continuing interest, night paddles are being continued until the end of semester (ending when exams start - second week of November). The afternoon paddles are also running as well, so please consider coming to both and having dinner with us between the two activities.

Fraser Island TripFri 25 Sep 09 ()
NOTE: DATES HAVE CHANGED. This trip now starts and finishes a day earlier than originally planned. A trip along the west coast of Fraser island, and possible whale watching. For stronger paddlers only.

2009 Club ChampionshipsSat 10 Oct 09 ()
This year's club championships are on Saturday afternoon of 10 October at the shed. It will be a fun day with sprints, novelty races and relays, as well as a barbecue at the end. There are also restricted categories for the beginners.

Requirements: Prior bookings are essential
Gear: Camping gear, kayaks, food, hat, sun protection, towel, swimming gear, water bottles, safety gear (life-jackets, helmets, etc), 2L water
Basic Costs: Petrol money to whoever you get a lift with. A donation to the club to go toward gear replacement (if you are economically able - don't let this stop you coming). Camping fees

The club is going bowling for Christmas. This is a chance to meet up and socialise with people you've been paddling with, and to meet those outside your normal kayak discipline(s).
