Macleay Island - Blakesley's Anchorage

A sea kayak trip over to Macleay island and then to North Stradbroke island if conditions are suitable. Note new date.

Discipline: Sea kayaking

Grade: 1 (note the distance is a bit longer)
Water: Bay - smooth waters
Distance: 20km max. Note that we will have neap tides. Depending on weather and paddlers, the trip can be shortened by returning to Victoria Point without crossing to Blakesley's Anchorage (10 km if we don't go to Blakesley's). 5 km between stops (about an hour).

Description: We will be leaving from Victoria Point heading to Pott's Point (NE point of Macleay Island). We will Stop at Pott's point and then cross to Blakesley's for lunch. We will then return to Victoria point the way we came.

Toilets are available at Victoria Point and Macleay island (and Coochiemudlo island if we stop there).

Date: April 29th, 2015
Load kayaks: Sat afternoon 28th Apr, 4:00 PM at the shed (confirmed by email)
Meet time: 7:00 AM at the shed (sharp). Depart St. Lucia 7:30 AM.
Depart point: Victoria Point boat ramp (on the northern point of the reserve). Access via the end of Colburn Street, Victoria Point. Arrive 8:30AM. Depart 8:30-9:00AM
Duration:9:00 AM to 4:00 PM
Return to shed : ~5:30-6PM

Tides: Low 10:03 (0.82m), High 4:01 (1.63m) (For Macleay Island add 30 min to these times)
Moon phase: First quarter (50%). Rise 12:34PM, set 11:58 PM
Sunset: 5:20 PM

Costs: Wear and tear contribution for club gear. Petrol money to your driver, and a few extra dollars in case of a coffee stop

Ability: Paddlers should have an appropriate level of fitness. Individuals must self assess their, and their equipment's, ability to participate in this level club event and should consult the trip leader if any aspect of their suitability requires clarification. All participants must have demonstrated a wet exit and a sea kayak T-rescue, contact the leader ASAP if you have not done this so it can be arranged.

Risks: Boat traffic, fatigue, marine life, sunburn, hypothermia, dehydration, paddle related injuries.
Risk minimisation: Keep group together during channel crossings. Periodic rest stops. Dress for the outdoors, Bring food/water/wind/ spray proof cag/ jacket and fleece to change into for lunch. Advise trip leader of any medical conditions beforehand. Safety equipment and paddler equipment.
Alternate course & take out points: The trip passes or stops on several islands so there are rest places on route. The largest leg is 5 km (optional). There are also passenger ferries and a vehicular ferry to the southern end of Macleay Island and Karragarra Island in case of emergency.
Emergency contact: VMR Victoria Point (32078717)

Safety Equipment: mobile, VHF radio, signal mirror, flares, spare paddle, tow line, repair kit, first aid kit.
Paddler equipment: Safe craft, spray deck, PFD, paddle leash, bailing device, medication, whistle, sunscreen, hat, long sleeved shirt/jacket/cag, minimum two litres water. Footwear suitable for paddling, swimming and bush walking. Food / Nourishment for the duration of the trip, including lunch. Warm gear in case the wind gets up (eg thermal and spray jacket are good). Warm gear while having lunch.

  • What size sea kayak do you need (e.g. if you are large).
Register by: Fri 27th April
Registration: Email Martin. Don't leave it too late as early registrations get preference. Note I'm planning an early night on Friday and a Dawn service paddle (elsewhere) on Sat morning so will only get to emails later on Sat.

If you membership needs completing, please get it in order beforehand (paperwork can be brought in on Sat or Sun morning).
