Flatwater instruction trip

Olympic paddler Amanda Rankin will help improve club members' paddling skills, whether beginners or more advanced. Entries close 17 March.

The club obtained a government training grant to improve the club's skills base. As part of this, we have organised a flatwater skills trip with Olympic medal winner Amanda Rankin from Queensland Canoeing.

This is a day trip to a flatwater destination (eg Currumbin creek). Half the day will be aimed at beginners (3h), and half the day (3h) is for advanced paddlers.

There will be a second similar training day later in semester.

There are limited places for this trip.

Plan

Saturday 31st March.

  • 5 PM - Load trailer with Roscos and one or two old TK1s. Two - three volunteers needed to help unload the trailer and load the Roscos etc. Please email the treasurer.
Sunday 1st April
  • 6 AM - We will meet promptly at the club shed and will load TK1s and K1's onto roof racks taking as many as we need or can fit on. Except where the advanced kayakers want particular kayaks we will take older K1s and TK1s to practice on.
  • 6.30 AM - Depart for Currumbin
     
  • 8 AM - Arrive Winders Park, Currumbin Creek (See map and instructions)
    Unload, meet Amanda, introductions and chat.
     
  • 8.30 AM to 11.30 AM Beginners Course
    • 1st hour will be part theory, part demonstration by Amanda and part use of her simulator by trainees.
    • 2nd hour on the water practising and exercising
    • 3rd hour will be self criticism and discussion taking videos of your paddling and discussing them as a group.
  • 11.30 AM -12.30 PM Lunch (please bring your own lunch)
  • 12.30 PM to 3.30 PM Advanced course.
    • 1st hour will be part theory, part demonstration by Amanda and part use of her simulator by trainees.
    • 2nd hour on the water practising and exercising
    • 3rd hour will be self criticism and discussion taking videos of your paddling and discussing them as a group.

     
  • Groups not paddling will be able to paddle up the creek and/or try their hand with TK1s and K1's.
     
  • 4:30 PM - Depart. We will need to pack up and leave by 4.30 PM
Gear to Bring
  • Two sets of kayaking gear in case you get wet and a change of clothes at the end.
  • Kayaking foot wear, hat and sunscreen
  • Water One Litre minimum
  • Lunch: Lunch will not be supplied. Bring something. There are shops but not within walking distance.
  • Snacks, drinks and goodies to offer around as needed
Directions
  • Take the Pacific Highway and after about 1.15 or 1.20 min turn off to Currumbin (EXIT NUMBER 93) - turning left into Sarawak Avenue when you come off.
  • After 300 M there is a large oval island with trees and grass. Go right around it and turn left into Thrower Drive
  • After 400 M cross the bridge over the Creek - then first left into Duringan Street.
  • Winders Park in on your left between you and the creek. There is a secondary road along the front and a sandy beach. Enter the park at the far end. We meet at the beach.
  • If you get to the Gold Coast Highway and Bridge you have gone too far.
