Circumnavigate Green Island

Green Island is surrounded by banks and at high tide turtles and other sea life is common. It’s a pleasant trip and will probably take about 4-5 hours including breaks.

We will depart from Manly Harbour on the bay.

We will aim to leave about 2.5 hours before high tide (2pm) and go anticlockwise stopping for a late lunch on Green Island.

Safety: Sea kayaking on Moreton Bay can be hazardous. If conditions are unfavourable we will kayak up Tingalpa Creek instead.

Time: Monday 9 June 2008 Meet at clubhouse at 10am
Duration: All Day. We will plan to leave the club by 10.30 am, be on the water before 11.30 am and be off the water by 4.30pm and back at the shed by 5pm.
Distance: about 15km.
Paddle type: Sea kayaking

Requirements:

  • Basic fitness - Although this trip will cater for relative beginners, basic skills and fitness are required. If you can kayak comfortably up river from the club to the radio mask and back at a reasonable rate then you should manage. There is more open water than the Boondall trip and you should be able to handle light chop.
  • Basic skills. You must have already attended a basic skills session at the St Lucia Shed. Only those able to demonstrate that they can use a skirt, do a wet exit and an assisted rescue will be taken on to Moreton Bay.
  • Equipment: Sea kayaks, skirts, paddle leashes, bailers and PFDs. Bring a picnic lunch, snacks, at least 2L WATER, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, insect repellant, money, hat, towel, warm gear, wind and rain proof top and change of clothing as you can get wet.
Basic Costs: If you can afford it, a donation towards kayak upkeep.
Meet: 10 am at the UQ Canoe Club to load kayaks. Depart before 10.30am and drive to Manly. Aim to be on the water at 1130.am.
Tides: High tide is at 2.14 pm
Registration: Please register your interest with the leader by email (first come first served). Please indicate whether you have transport and if you have roof racks for kayaks. If you have not kayaked with the leader before please give some indication of your skills level to assist planning.

Basic Requirements

  • Basic fitness (if water based activity)
  • You must be a current financial member to participate (except for come and try events). Polo is open to members of Australian canoeing (i.e. members of most AC affiliated canoe clubs).
  • You must be able to swim (if event takes place on water)
  • You must have signed the club waiver and agreed to abide by the club's rules

  • Details are subject to change. Please check this web site regularly.
  • All trips may be changed due to circumstances or conditions, and trip leaders have the final decision on whether it goes ahead or not, and who goes (they will contact you if this happens).
  • Where there is an option to paddle double kayaks, then the first in get singles, and the last ones paddle doubles, unless people specifically want to take double kayaks or the trip leader decides differently.
